Say Hello to My Little Friend

For my very first dslr, I decided to go with something a little less traditional...

Photobucket

After months of researching, I went from being dead-set on the Nikon D90 to a Pentax K-X. I have been pretty shielded from considering any other options outside Canon or Nikon, but boy, am I glad I found this little number.

  • HD Video. Check.
  • Small and lightweight. Check.
  • Good photos in low light. Check.
  • Compatible with vintage Pentax lenses. Check.
  • Amazing value. Check.
(apparently it also has the same Sony sensor as the Nikon D90)

Oh yeah, and who says all slrs have to be blah black? In Japan, you can get this camera customized in 100 color combinations. I obviously couldn't wait for the US to get more colors, so I ordered this cutie in Storm Trooper White.

After reading the reviews, I felt like I got the best bang for my buck with this camera. I am beside myself with this little beauty and still can't believe it's only a hair larger than my P&S (ok, maybe 2 hairs larger but you get the idea). Will be bringing this little guy everywhere I go, so expect more photos in random places!

Here are some pics I took while experimenting with the new camera. I like gadgets, so I've been having fun learning the ins and outs of the slr. I've never taken any photography classes, so everything is pretty new to me. Hooray for actually stepping out of my comfort zone and moving away from the Automatic mode!

This pink hue was created using the random cross-processing mode on the camera. The outcome of the photo is completely unexpected!

  10. RE: Haha, thank you! ^^ I'm going to be getting my first DSLR soon too! I might look into that one, although I'm already set on the Canon XSi. I'll look into the Pentax K-X anyway - It looks like a really fun and unique camera. :D

  18. Yay for new cameras! I went with a cannon, but may have changed my mind if I had know that I could order a camera in "storm trooper white." Hope it is everything you want it to be.

  21. grace: So far, the AA batteries that came with it are still going strong! If you get this camera, I would recommend getting rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. I happen to already have those, so AAs are no big deal for me. Yes, I'm sure you will hear all about my camera adventures!

Lisa: Sorry about your Point & Shoot! I would definitely recommend getting an slr as a replacement if you are into photography in the least bit. I'm having so much fun with mine!

Candice: Yes, definitely look into the Pentax! It's a great option!

Julie: I probably should get a photography book as well. Maybe Photography for Dummies? ;)

  26. WOW! It does cross processing IN camera? Wonderful. I think the biggest bonuses are that it offers is that you can use older, vintage Pentax lenses.

I wouldn't say you weren't ill-advised for only looking at Nikon and Canons, though. They are the best in the market for a reason. Canon, especially. Best lenses. But Nikons get amazing photos, too!

For example, on my latest photos, those were taken on a D70s.

    Check it out!

  28. Sandy a la Mode: Thank you, and I'm happy to be joining the club!

Yve: Congrats on getting the D90! It's a super camera, and your photos look great!

Sofia Leo: Keep your options open and in the end, choose which camera is right for you!

Maeko: Yes, the KX has cross-processing and filter options IN the camera! It's pretty nifty. Oh, yes, Canon and Nikon still rule the market, but I think I found the camera that's best for me. BTW, your photos are lovely!

Bumpkin on a Swing: I'll be sure to stop by again! Thank you!

  29. Great choice!

I looked at the Pentax before I got my first DSLR Nikon D3000.

I love the fact that they come in different colors. You'll definitely stand out!

In L.A., everyone is a Nikon drone.
