I attended a lawyerly function yesterday at the Intercontinental Hotel, and the customized menu was superb. There was an Asian theme for the association's 25th anniversary. Thought I would share the beautiful presentation of the food with everyone.
Salad: Asian greens with snap peas, bean sprouts & firecrackers on top of crisp fried wonton. Sesame garlic dressing drizzled on top.
The salad itself tasted a little too raw for my liking because of the sprouts, but I ate the whole fried wonton skin. I'm a sucker for that fried goodness.
Entree: Petite filet with teriyaki glaze. Braised chicken in orange sauce. Long beans & Asian julienne vegetables. Steamer basket of rice.
The steak was super tender and tasty!
Dessert: Chocolate bento box with mango sorbet and fresh fruit.
This was an amazing dessert! The sorbet tasted exactly like frozen mango, and I would have eaten the entire bento box if it wasn't for a friend distracting me.
I have been fascinated with ombre for quite some time, but I wanted to wait and see if it was a short-lived fad. I ended up forgetting about ombre until yesterday when I saw these leggings on Hautelook.
I'm starting a new series where I raid the closets of people who I think have superb style. If you or someone you know is fashion-conscious and has impeccable or unique taste, send pics and a description to invasionista@gmail.com to potentially be featured in a future article.
First up is the lovely girl-about-town, Tamar. She lives in a loft, has a cat named Olive, and makes the best Pimm's Cup (umbrella straw included). As a shop girl for Tootsies, her work life consists of styling clients for their next shindig and being surrounded by the latest collection from designer heavyweights such as Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen, and Chloe. Not too shabby if you ask me.
Style Q & A:
Q: Please list 3 words that describe you. A: athirst, vehement, & eager
Q: What designer inspires you the most and why? A: Right not, Alexander McQueen. Sometimes his things are light-hearted, sometimes playful, always sexy and beautiful.
Q: How would you describe your style? A: Juvenile. I have the rest of my life to be serious.
Q: Where do you like to shop locally? Are there any stores you wish were local? A: I shop where I work, and other than that, I am only interested in thrift stores. It's either a fight to afford it or find it...
Ahhh... yes, I finally got to take in the Alexander McQueen moto boots in all its glory. After seeing them on Fashiontoast, I knew it was my destiny to at least meet them in person.

Tamar's (and Ryan's) Closet... Did you check out the shoe shelf?!
Yes, boot season is almost upon us! If I could don only one type of footwear, it would surely be boots. Psychologically, I think my feet, ankles, and legs just feel more secure. Is that neurotic? Maybe. Plus, your feet will sustain only minor damage if someone accidentally tramples over your feet with their 6-inch stilettos (yes, it's happened to me before!). Here are some boots I'm currently coveting. The hard part will be trying to narrow the right ones down for my fall wardrobe. I also can't seem to stay away from the hardware.
Yana is not only gorgeous, but she also has my dream job. She is the marketing director and a buyer for AA Concepts, Inc. which has brought the concept boutique idea to the forefront of Houston fashion and has expanded to cities such as New Orleans, Las Vegas, and Austin to name a few. With Yana's chic sensibilities, a part of AA Concepts' success must be due to her on-spot forecasting of the latest trends.
Style Q & A:
Q: List 3 words that describe you. A: Indecisive, impatient, random
Q: What designer inspires you the most and why? A: Rodarte and Vena Cava are great for their femininity and elegance, yet they still have a bit of edgy aesthetic.
Q: How would you describe your style? A: I pretty much just wear whatever appeals to me on a particular day, so it's a hodgepodge of different looks and colors, though I think anything obviously trendy is best in small doses.
Q: Where do you like to shop locally? Are there any stores you wish were local (include name and location)? A: The bulk of my wardrobe comes form work (Wish, Duo, Langford Market, Contents, and Method), which has me covered for pretty much any style I would want, but I do check eBay for vintage pieces and shoes. Having access to TopShop would also be fantastic, but not likely to happen in Houston anytime soon.
